How to Set Up Your Vending Machine

If you purchase a vending machine from a reputable company, it should come with the manufacturer’s User Manual/Operation Manual.  In some cases, these can be very user friendly and walk you step-by-step through the most common questions/issues you’re going to have with your machine. In other cases they can be very scientific and difficult to understand.  Make sure to read over your manual for the set-up instructions.  If your machine didn’t come with a manual, you can usually find these online by searching by the make and model.

Once you have your machine unpackaged, you’re going to want to move it with a pallet jack or utility dolly to the exact spot you’re going to place it in your location.

You will need a power strip with a surge protector to get the machine powered up at your location.  Once plugged in, most machines will start correctly up to automatically.  If your vending machine is refrigerated, you may need to adjust the thermostat.  Reference your Owner’s Manual for instructions on how to adjust the temperature.

Next, you’re going to want to choose your products and determine your prices. You’re going to want to enter the “Programming Mode” for your machine.  Follow the instructions on your user manual to do so.  The programming mode is where you program the prices for each product selection on your machine.  Set a price for each selection and then load your products into your machine. If you’ve purchased a credit card reader for your vending machine, you’ll need to call or email the manufacturer of the device to set up an account and get your unit ready to accept credit/debit card purchases.

Finally, you should conduct several test vends to make sure that everything is working properly on your machines. This will ensure proper functioning of the unit and prevent the machine from rejecting payment due to inability to produce change.  If everything checks out, then your machine is ready to start making money!

How are The Discount Vending Store prices so low?

Being in business for many years has awarded us time to develop associations and set up business practices that actually work.

The most important area of savings begins with our purchasing. Creating relationships with vending machinist who are exiting the vending business allows us to avoid in most cases purchasing straight from manufacturers. Also, taking the time to research shipping carriers and finding the best deal contributes to savings, which we can then pass on to our client.

Occasionally, when circumstance do require us to buy from a manufacturer, we more often than not avoid purchasing any unnecessary embellishments.

When buying straight from a manufacturer, you will be tempted with extended warranties, training, technical support, etc. While we buy our machines already discounted, we are able to offer similar options to our customers, but at a significantly lower cost.

Most often when a purchase is being made, buying in bulk will ensure the biggest bargain. Such is the same for buying vending machines. The “new” healthy vending machines we buy are typically 1-2 years old, have never been used before. They have been stored in a facility and are still in the unique packaging.   The preowned vending machines we buy are quality preowned machines that still have plenty of life in them and are warily examined by our technical department. All of the machines we buy are sold in full working situation.

In summary, there are many factors that are involved with how well we price our machines. All these aspects combine and give us the ability to offer great, affordable vending machines with warranties to our customers all at a discounted price.

Should I Purchase a Warranty For My Vending Machine?

Purchasing a vending machine can be a stressful and costly ordeal and when doing so you must consider the potential for injure or defects over the life of your machine. That’s where a warranty comes in but how do you choose which warranty option is the best for your needs? What exactly does the warranty cover and for how long? Are there any services NOT covered under the warranty? Is all of this even worth the extra money?

When it comes down to it, a warranty is only as well as the company holding it. Many vending companies are only in business for 3-5 years, so carefully consider this when deciding on a warranty option. If the company is offering a 1 year warranty then chances are you won’t encounter any serious issues. However, if the company is proudly proclaiming that they offer an un-beatable full 7 years warranty, then this should raise a red flag. Keep in mind that if you buy a machine brand new, any manufacturer defects will usually be noticed within the first year of operation.

So what exactly is covered under a common warranty? Well, by and large a warranty means parts. If you need a replacement vending motor, coin unit, or controller board, then the warranty is your friend. However, when it comes to the installation, this will be entirely up to you and while most machines are fairly easy to operate and come with detailed owner’s manuals, you may still end up having to call the actual manufacturer for troubleshooting steps. Whether you purchase a warranty or not, chances are that unless you have a local vending technician in your area, you will be making your own machine repairs. Vending machines are not difficult to repair and a warranty can save you a lot of money on the replacement parts, especially if you bought your machine pre-owned, as these machines will need repairs more often.

At The Discount Vending Store every vending machine we sell, whether it be brand new or refurbished, comes with a warranty at no extra cost! Not only that, but we also provide free technical support for the life of the machine, so if you ever run into a situation where you need to make repairs that you’re uncomfortable doing on your own, just call us and we’ll walk you through the repairs step by step and help with any replacement parts you may need. Take a look at our product listings to find the hottest new machines and find refurbished machines that are in like-new condition and check out our blog for more tips and inside vending secrets.

Mice In Vending Machine

I have a mice in my vending machine !

I visited one of my location 2 days ago and i was surprised why there are still a lot of snacks and chocolate bars inside the vending machine, i was very surprised because this is a monthly location and normally it is empty when visiting this location for the longest time that im servicing it.

I as usual goes through the machine and when i was checking everything,

i noticed that several chips had foil holes and the contents inside were all empty.

I immediately already suspected that this is done by a mice since i had 1 location also in the Vancouver area where this thing happened and the solution was to cover a hole which is about 1 to 2 inches in diameter where the electrical wire goes into the machine.

Normally all the vending machine has the electrical cord going into the machine covered with a rubber grommet

but in some cases when you have been moving and changing machines this rubber grommet is not secured into it’s original position.

I heard that there are locations when they hear that when your machine is contaminated by a mouse they wanted to remove completely as soon as possible and no one will be using it anymore, since it is not a joke when the machine contains some mice droppings and you will get contaminated with disease and the customers are just making sure that everything is good.

These are the pictures on how the mice go into the machine and pictures on also how to make sure that they will never get into the machine anymore.

Bad Day At Work

When doing the vending machine business,

never force yourself to be in a hurry at the time, once you get into an accident it’s all over.

It is not worth your time and effort to earn a few dollars if you get injured. What is the purpose of earning money if you had an accident while you are in a hurry. I always remember in my childhood days when my mother tells me not to hurry up all the time and it is still very finely printed in my memory :

  • what is the use of money when you get into a car accident ? all the money in the world will not make you normal again
  • what is the use of money when you get into a motorcycle accident ? it might be too late to regret
  • if you are late in school then what is the big deal ? if you get into an accident would a late report in your school records affect you and your future well being ?

Whenever you are doing something just take in easy and sometimes you have to bend the rules and have to take care of yourself first before anything else, if you are late of an interview then maybe there is a bigger reason why you are late because you are cautious when driving to your destination.

If a bad day in work can be avoided

then you will still have the next day to go your vending location when your late in visiting just becuase you are extra careful when driving to that place, you just have to let go what people think about you and just do what is right.

In some extreme cases like you have been trying to go that particular location every other day but its a tough place since parking is very rare and when there is a vacant space the next u turn, someone else grab that precious spot. In your mind maybe its around $50 profit if you’d have done it but because you have to be careful to find a parking slot someone else got it ahead of you. If you are too fast without being in compsure you might get into a split second accidents which are too numerous to mention.

Well i am usually a very careful guy when doing my things

and everything is scheduled and organized but it was today that i had my bad work day when i was hurrying up to my van to go to the next location that was closing and was thinking maybe i can still make it on the next location or else i wont be coming to vancouver tomorrow and will be delayed after 2 days since the next day is for surrey and richmond locations.

With this in mind i think i would have to change my priorities and mindset again when getting things done. My suggestion to myself is just to take it easy and try to finish work when you are able to with the thought of being very cautious and careful.

It would be a suggestion that the divider painted in bright colors like yellow to avoid other people that might trip or fall.

It is absolutely my fault since i was in a hurry to get things done.

Healthy Vending is a Growing Sector

Growing Sector

The healthy snack vending industry is the fastest-growing sector of the vending industry. With the rise in awareness of the need for healthy food and snacks, healthy food vending is rising faster than ever.

Smart Snacks in Schools

Opportunities for vending locations in schools are especially hot in today’s market. The USDA recently published a science-based set of nutrition standards for snack foods and drinks sold to children at school during the day. Under the USDA All Foods Sold in Schools standard, which creates an opportunity for businesses offering healthy vending options? Naturals2Go is uniquely positioned to offer new operators an edge in today’s convenience snack market.

A Nationwide Trend

Outside of schools, the demand for vending machines that offer healthy snacks and beverages continues to grow. More and more people are looking out for their health and are becoming more aware of the foods they consume. In a 2014 Nielsen Global Survey of Snacking, more than 30,000 consumers in 60 different countries were polled, and the results were conclusive.

Most people today are actively looking for ways to improve their health. Inclusion of healthy drinks and snacks in the vending machines is a result of the trend towards awareness of the unhealthy ingredients in the snacks people consume.

How to Start a Healthy Vending Business

Are you looking for a new business opportunity that requires no special skills or training, can be done part time or as a home-based business, and can get your whole family involved ?  How about starting a vending machine business ?

Whether you’re vending traditional snacks, drinks, healthy snacks, or a combination, you’ll need a vending machine that is appropriate for your product and eye-catching to draw in customers.

Many healthy vending franchises say they’re giving you a great deal when they offer vending operators start-up packages that include the machine, product, locations, tutorials, etc. for exorbitant prices. Such franchises include Human Healthy Vending, Healthy You, Fresh Healthy Vending, Naturals 2 Go, and others.

Don’t be fooled! You can buy a vending machine new or used with a warranty for less than half of the cost that the healthy vending franchises charge! When buying a machine, keep in mind that a Healthy Wrap or some other healthy design/decal will identify your vending machine as a healthy option for customers and attract more sales.

Many healthy vending operators who are just getting into the business are under the impression that they have to special-order product or purchase online to offer their customers the healthier options they’re looking for.

Buying in bulk from places like Sam’s Club or Costco can save you hundreds when re-stocking your machine and you can then pass those savings on to your customers. Additionally it is more convenient to be able to buy them on demand as you are serving your route instead of waiting days for the product to arrive.

Once you have the perfect healthy vending machine with all the best products stocked in it, you need to find the most profitable locations for your machines. You can usually sell a prospective customer on your machine, product, and services alone, without the need to offer a commission.

Lastly you will need the proper licensing from your state, county and city where you are doing business.

The vending business is one of the easiest small businesses to get into and the Return on Investment (ROI) is typically less than a year if you do it right by buying an affordable machine and securing good locations.

What Products to Stock in a Healthy Vending Machine?

With new changing health regulations, one of the first questions to ask when considering buying a healthy vending machine is what products to stock. There are new healthy vending franchises popping up every week and they all promise to provide you with the best machine and the best support.  If you are willing to spend $10,000 – $15,000 on a new machine then you can get the list. We have always told my customers in the past that they should just buy the healthy products at Sam’s Club, Costco, or even Whole Foods.  When you buy from local sources, you won’t pay for shipping costs, so you can save a lot of money this way.

From the input we’ve received from other healthy vendors, here’s a list of some of the most popular healthy snacks to stock in your healthy vending machine.   Remember, you’ll want to have a good mixture of “good” ,“better” and “best” healthy snacks to optimize your cash flow.

In addition, we recommend you put in some of your traditional unhealthy snacks and drinks to satisfy your customers who could care less about healthy snacks.

  • Boost Complete Nutrition Drinks
  • EAS Carb Control Shakes
  • Gatorade
  • Zero Water
  • Izze Sparkling Sodas
  • Diet Sodas
  • Sugarfree Energy Drinks (Monster + Red Bull do well)
  • Fiber One Bars
  • Clif Bars
  • Nutrigrain Bars
  • Special K Breakfast Bars
  • Squeeze Apple Sauce
  • Welch’s Fruit Snacks
  • Dole Fruit Cups
  • Beef Jerky
  • Trail Mix / Peanuts / Cashews / Almonds / Pistachios
  • Popchips
  • Baked Chips
  • Wheat Thins
  • Goldfish
  • Sugarfree Gum

We do provide our customers with the complete recommended product list when they buy multiple healthy vending machines from The Discount Vending Store.  It will include the bestselling healthy drinks, healthy snacks, and healthy entrée items along with the suggested retail price.

You will need to do a lot of testing to see what’s right for your specific market though.  The key to buying the product is the buy it at an affordable price so that your customers can afford it as well.

Most folks are willing to pay a little more for a healthy item but if you charge too much, they will keep buying the traditional junk food.

How to Display Nutritional Facts on Vending Machines

Healthy vending is not a crave that is going away. Society now is striving to make healthier eating habits and that includes what they buy from vending machines.  People want to know what they are eating, and laws are being enacted requiring companies to display nutritional facts on all food being sold.

The vending industry is no exception.  We have been the poster child for unhealthy food and drinks, but we can change this stereotype.  I have blogged about Fit Pick in past blogs, and this is still an excellent program for promoting healthy snacks in vending machines.

In fact, it offers over 500 products which can be labeled as “healthy” and over 175 government agencies and 100 schools have adopted it to help promote healthy vending.

Some of these devices are a small 6” screen that can be added to a vending machine to display ads, promotions, and display the nutritional information.  Some products are even combined with the credit card reader and can be used to track real time product data, and provide pre-kitting information back to the office.

The companies that sell the touch screens have also provided a database of the most popular foods and beverages which can be uploaded with the nutritional value information already built in.  If your product isn’t in their inventory, then you can upload your own nutritional values into the system.

At The Discount Vending Store, we pride ourselves in keeping our prices low and that means finding products that are affordable.

We won’t be discussing a topic here unless it can be sold affordably in our on-line store.  We are now offering the Air Vend on our vending machines which will provide the nutritional value information and also process credit cards.

Some folks say that this is a waste of time and money and that their customers don’t care about nutritional information on their candy bars and sodas.

Although most of their customers don’t care about the nutritional values, there is a growing percentage of customers who do care and they are not buying from our vending machines because they have the perception that it is all “junk food”.

By providing nutritional facts on all the products sold in the vending machine, you are proving to that potential customer that the snack is indeed healthy and hopefully you will convert them as a customer.
